One day in November 2014, artist Coco Fusco made a radical transformation before my eyes—into the stunning likeness of Dr. Zira, the chimpanzee psychologist in the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. A year after her Walker Art Center performance, as Fusco prepared to reprise Observations of Predation in Humans, a meditation on race and violence, I shared images and text on the extensive processes—both intellectual and physical—that helped her get into character.
