How can we be good allies? As writers, artists, designers, and social justice advocates, we in the MAKESH!T collective aim to use our skills to help causes we believe in. We created and donated a Black Lives Matter banner to local activists, who then used it in actions, including a shutdown of an Interstate 94 ramp, at the Twin Cities Pride Festival, and at the Minneapolis Police Department Fourth Precinct headquarters, where in November 2015 activists occupied the precinct entrance to push for the release of videotapes related to the police killing of 24-year-old unarmed black man Jamar Clark. We volunteered to make banners for the Million Artist Movement as well, and plan to continue assisting the racial justice movement through our creativity and time.
